Born to a scholarly family in Coimbatore, India, Padma was initiated into the divine art form of Bharathanatyam at the tender age of 4. Groomed under the able guidance of Kalaimamani Palaniswamy Pillai, she imbibed the beauty of the Pandanallur style of Bharathanatyam and over the decades that followed, Padma carved a niche for herself in the world of art and dance. In addition to a successful career as a performer, she founded the Padmalaya Dance Foundation in 1985 as a platform to provide holistic dance education to the younger generation.

From learning her first steps in Coimbatore to becoming an accomplished artiste travelling the world, Guru Smt. Padma Murali has given hundreds of performances all over India and abroad. Some of the popular banners, to name a few, are Arts Academy, Delhi, RR Sabha and South India Club, Kolkata, Kala Rasika, Aurangabad, Krishna gana Sabha, Chennai, Indian Institute of World Culture, Bangalore, NCPA, Mumbai, Hampi Utsav, Mysore Dasara festival, Sangeet Natak Academy,etc. Padma has also performed at international events in countries such as U.K., U.S.A, Germany, Austria, Italy and France. Padma represented India at the TNV Festivalen held in Norway.

 

Along with her daughter, Janani Murali and daughter-in-law, Poornima Kaushik, the trio have toured several cities in Europe and Americas. Since the inception of Padmalaya in 1985, Padma has trained over 1000 students across the cities of Bangalore, Mumbai, Kolkata and Aurangabad. Intensive courses have also been taken up by visiting students from Europe, UK and America. As Chairperson of the International Dance Alliance, Bangalore Chapter, she has been instrumental in bringing an eclectic bouquet of art to Bangalore audiences over the past few decades. As a mentor and guide to students across the globe, Padma revels in passing on a way of life through the arts to the next generation.
