AN ORGANIC PEDAGOGY
Learning Bharatanatyam at Padmalaya has always been a joy-filled experience. Holistic in approach, students learn the practical, theoretical and allied aspects of dance in every class. Story-telling, Yoga, theatrics and language are integral modules at every level. Every child is encouraged to progress at a comfortable pace and not in a pre-set time-bound regimen. The pedagogy is an integrated approach- bringing in traditional methods of knowledge transference and cross-cultural systems of movement vocabulary and teaching methodology. Students are led through an organic growth from the first steps, through assimilative levels into auspicious beginnings and dedication to the arts.
“Learning is continuous and a life long journey. “
We truly believe in the sanctity of these words and are guided by the principles of inclusivity. Group and individual classes are conducted according to proficiency and age group.

The dance class is a place where a student’s awareness of body and mind allows them to take ownership of the dance. Towards this, the Padmalaya pedagogy is continuously evolving to keep the student constantly thinking, encouraging healthy questioning in order to derive answers.
Every class at the intermediate batch level “ANUBHAVAM” entails a Q&A – that leads to tasks and explorations for the students. One such was “CREATE A NEW ADAVU for the teacher” born out of a “If the form of Bharatanatyam keeps changing with time, who decides what to change?”. Such an exploration allows the student to understand experientially the aesthetics of movement, while giving them a glimpse of the power of creation.
At the “SHREYASAM” level, students are encouraged to find their own voice. Through inter-disciplinary methods of emoting, embodying and journaling, the students are encouraged to claim their individuality even as they continue to understand the intricacies of the art form.
